SIRIM Type Approval in Malaysia: the complete checklist
If your product transmits or receives radio signals, it can't legally be sold or used in Malaysia until it has SIRIM Type Approval. This guide walks through exactly which products need it, the documents you'll be asked for, the process end to end, and the mistakes that most often cause delays.
Do you need SIRIM Type Approval?
SIRIM Type Approval is the mandatory certification for communications and multimedia equipment placed on the Malaysian market, under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and enforced by the MCMC. In practice, you need it if your product contains a radio transmitter or receiver. That includes:
- Mobile phones and tablets (2G–5G)
- WiFi routers, modems, access points, and range extenders
- Laptops, tablets, and IoT devices with WiFi or Bluetooth
- Bluetooth audio — earbuds, speakers, headsets
- Smart-home and IoT devices, sensors, and gateways
- RFID and NFC equipment
- Two-way radios, remote controls, and other radio transmitters
Purely electrical products with no radio function generally fall under a different scheme — the Energy Commission's ST CoA — not SIRIM Type Approval.
The SIRIM Type Approval document checklist
Gathering the right documents up front is the single biggest thing you can do to speed up approval. Here's what you'll typically need:
Your submission checklist
- A Malaysian-registered company to hold the application (the applicant)
- An accredited test report — from an ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory, less than 5 years old, covering the standards for your product's frequency bands
- Product technical specifications / datasheet
- User or operating manual
- Block diagram and circuit / schematic diagram
- Product photos (external and internal) and PCB layout
- Label artwork showing where the MCMC marking will be placed
- Details of the radio module(s) and the frequency bands used
- A Letter of Authorization, if an agent applies on behalf of the manufacturer or brand owner
Don't have a Malaysian company? You don't need to set one up. MY Broadband can act as your local applicant, so overseas manufacturers and brand owners can get certified without a Malaysian entity.
Types of SIRIM approval
Standard Approval
The full certification for products you intend to sell in Malaysia. Valid for 5 years and typically issued in about 2–4 weeks from a complete submission.
Special Approval
For exhibitions, demonstrations, trials, testing, or short-term use — issued faster (around 14 working days) but limited in quantity and validity.
Import Permit
Required to import regulated communications equipment into Malaysia. Often handled alongside the type-approval application.
The approval process, step by step
- Confirm your product is regulated and identify the applicable standards for its frequency bands.
- Test the product at an accredited lab — or reuse existing valid, accredited test reports.
- Compile the technical documentation from the checklist above.
- Submit the application with the documents, test reports, and fees through the appointed certification body.
- Technical evaluation is carried out and any queries are resolved.
- The Certificate of Approval is issued.
- Apply the MCMC label to your product and keep records for renewal.
Timeline, validity, and labelling
- Timeline: ~2–4 weeks for Standard Approval; ~14 working days for Special Approval.
- Validity: 5 years for a standard certificate, then renewal.
- Labelling: approved products must carry the MCMC label showing the approval reference before they're sold or used.
5 mistakes that delay approval
- Test reports that are too old (over 5 years) or from a non-accredited laboratory.
- No Malaysian-registered company to act as the applicant.
- Incomplete technical documents — missing schematics, manuals, or photos.
- Reports that don't cover the correct standards for the product's frequency bands.
- Selling or using the equipment, or skipping the MCMC label, before approval is granted.

How long does SIRIM Type Approval take?
Standard Approval typically takes about 2–4 weeks from a complete submission. Special Approval (for exhibitions, demonstrations, or trials) is faster, at around 14 working days. Timelines depend on the product and how complete your documentation is.
Do I need a Malaysian company to apply?
Yes — the applicant must be registered in Malaysia. Overseas manufacturers can appoint a local applicant; MY Broadband can act in that role, so you don't need to set up a Malaysian entity.
How long is the approval valid?
A standard SIRIM Type Approval certificate is valid for 5 years, after which it must be renewed.
Can I use my existing test reports?
Often yes — provided they're from an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory, are less than 5 years old, and cover the standards applicable to your product's frequency bands. Otherwise, new accredited testing is required.
